Description

From John Derian’s celebrated decoupage collection, the Bitter Orange Large Vase brings 18th- and 19th-century botanical illustrations to life in vibrant colour. Hand-applied imagery of citrus branches and fruit adorns the ceramic surface, transforming it into both a vessel and a work of art. It makes a striking centrepiece, whether filled with flowers or displayed on its own.

Founded in Paris in 1996, Astier de Villatte is renowned for preserving the spirit of traditional craftsmanship through objects of quiet beauty and character. Each ceramic piece is handmade individually in Paris by Tibetan artisans, then engraved with the house signature and the initials of the master artisan who made it — a subtle mark of the human hand behind every creation.

Crafted from black terracotta, each piece is shaped using a time-honoured technique that embraces the irregularities of the making process rather than concealing them. These gentle variations in form and surface are part of what gives Astier de Villatte ceramics their distinctive charm. A soft, milky white glaze is then applied by hand, creating the luminous finish for which the house is known. Though delicate in appearance, these pieces are remarkably durable, bringing a sense of heritage, artistry and understated elegance to the table.

About Us

Founded by the late June Summerill and Bernadette Bishop, two great friends with a truly effortless and unique sense of style, Summerill & Bishop first opened its doors on 18th May, 1994 in Holland Park, and has remained on the same quiet, leafy corner of Clarendon Cross ever since.

Fantastic home cooks and entertainers both, June and Bernadette were frustrated with the offerings at most kitchen and tableware shops at the time, and with the lack of personality and intimacy, so they decided to create one of their own, where beauty and functionality would both be key.

At Summerill & Bishop we believe that if people take the time to lay the table and present a meal beautifully, they'll enjoy it all the more and create a lasting memory for those who share it with them.

For us, laying the table is an art form that we can all master at home and is one of the simplest ways to tell someone what they mean to you. The table isn't just a place to pass food, you pass tradition, memory, and love, too. Read our full story here...

The story

We are longtime collectors of Astier de Villatte’s 18th and 19th century-inspired designs that are imbued with an elegant nostalgia and often, an offbeat sense of humour. Handmade in Paris by Tibetan artisans, these pieces are crafted from black terracotta using a special technique which leaves deliberate imperfections on the surface and are transformed by a milky white glaze. Delicate though they might be, these pieces are extremely durable and make wonderful decorative tableware.
