Introducing ‘London Plane’, the first design from our new ‘Couture Collection’.

Discover a triptych of limited edition ‘Table Gowns’ embroidered entirely with 260,000 sequins.

The collection celebrates artistry and innovation in textile development – a true work of art for the table.

The Table Gowns’ design derives its inspiration from the procession of London Plane Trees that line the streets surrounding our shop in Notting Hill. Their leafy, graceful branches cover the streets protectively year-round, quiet giants, beautiful and plentiful... the lungs of London. Their distinctive mottled and multi-coloured bark, that creates an almost camouflage-esque pattern, forms the basis of the design.

The collection comprises three ‘table gowns’, in a selection of sizes.

These items are made to order.

A 165cm x 380cm tablecloth will fit between eight and twelve people around the table.

About Us

Founded by June Summerill and Bernadette Bishop, two great friends with a truly effortless and unique sense of style, Summerill & Bishop first opened its doors on 18th May, 1994 in Holland Park, and has remained on the same quiet, leafy corner of Clarendon Cross ever since.

Fantastic home cooks and entertainers both, June and Bernadette were frustrated with the offerings at most kitchen and tableware shops at the time, and with the lack of personality and intimacy, so they decided to create one of their own, where beauty and functionality would both be key.

To commemorate Bernadette's passing, S&B trademarked her signature flower design and designed a beautiful line of linens which launched in Sept 2015. And that is how S&B decided to focus on table linen - the fabric of life.

At Summerill & Bishop we believe that if people take the time to lay the table and present a meal beautifully, they'll enjoy it all the more and create a lasting memory for those who share it with them.

For us, laying the table is an art form that we can all master at home and is one of the simplest ways to tell someone what they mean to you. The table isn't just a place to pass food, you pass tradition, memory, and love, too. Read our full story here...

Build The Table

The story

Each ‘Table Gown’ has approximately 260,000 sequins embroidered onto pure 100% French linen. The process takes place in Switzerland, on classic Saurer ‘Schiffli’ embroidery machines with special made to measure sequin applications in a length of 14 metres. These machines are custom-made for sequin-cutting, are over fifty years old and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. To achieve the 165cm width of these designs, our manufacturer had to develop a new, high-precision technique to embroider the cloth in two strips without a visible connection. This technique is executed entirely by hand. Once created, each cloth is retouched by hand – around 12 hours is needed to retouch a single table gown because of the complex, multi-coloured camouflage design. The final finishes and hemming are then completed by hand in the S&B studio in London.
